Tiivistelmä:Gary Hamel incites managers to revolt in his new book The Future of Management. He indicts current management practices for 1.) that most management systems and principles are founded on a hopelessly obsolete management paradigm and 2.) that management innovation represents the ultimate source of competitive advantage. Hamel's thesis is far from convincing since it is not evident that the adaptations in structures, systems and leadership styles driven by changes in the business environment and new technologies require a new management paradigm. Furthermore, it is not obvious that 21st century management will be based upon distributed innovation, participative decision making and market-based mechanisms. This paper argues that the future of the management is more likely to involve the extension of existing management principles and practices to embrace higher levels of complexity - in particular multidimensional integration - accompanied by greater reliance upon informal structures and systems, which include self-organization. Different leadership styles and approaches to decision making are implied by these changes. However, the wholesale dismantling of existing management practices or the principles underpinning them are not implied even though Hamel advocates so.
