Tiivistelmä:Some results of the rapidly growing literature on the economics of trade unions are summarized. "Economic" and "political" models of the trade union are specified. A model of a "managerial" union is developed. In this model policy is influenced by both management and membership preferences. Some economic effects of "political" unions are examined. The potentially important role of union leadership is emphasized. It is shown that union leaders are able to exercise discretionary power and this is sometimes not in accordance with the interest of union members. The managerial model is used to consider the economic effect of changes in the balance of internal union power. Union democracy is interpreted as the degree of membership power.
