Tiivistelmä:As Korea moves from authoritarianism to democracy, its labour movement may go through many of the stages of USA labour history. By studying the advantages and disadvantages of traditional union practices, the emerging country might learn from the older one. A few industry-wide negotiation patterns in the USA are considered. Some changes in the union contracts in the 1980s in contrast to the 1970s are demonstrated. The characteristics of the new cooperation between employees and management are discussed. Arguments are provided that an effective cooperation depends on management and employees sharing an interest in their company's survival. Some disturbing questions for the future of industrial relations are reviewed.
