| Tiivistelmä: | Small railroad lines, financed and run by only one business enterprise, have received little attention in economic, business and transportation history research. Although small railroads were originally intended merely to satisfy the transportation demands of very limited areas, they succeeded not only in connecting dispersed production centres with the large railroad networks , but in opening up entirely new eco- nomic regions. The mining industry became the leading sector in the development of small railroad lines, as it was within the larger economic framework. |
