Tiivistelmä:This article charts the introduction and use of discretionary pay for academic staff in the "old" UK universities. It shows the way that discretion has been used and tries to assess the impact that discretionary pay has had. A number of critical comments are made about the use fo discretionary pay in universities: in particular that it has been used without clear criteria and on an effective mechanism for the measurement of performance. However, discretionary pay may have had a more subtle effect helping to change the culture and reinforcing other moves to a more managerialist and market oriented approach.
