Tiivistelmä:This article is concerned with the economics of happiness. Happiness is not something that governments are trying to record from year to year, although they could - and should. The results suggest that economic progress buys only a small amount of extra happiness. Reported happiness in the USA has gone up only fractionally over the post-war period. Reported levels of "satisfaction with life" in Europe are only slightly higher than 20 years ago, some countries show falls. Rich countries seem to have high suicide rates. Job satisfaction has not increased. Because the task of measuring well-being is a difficult and relatively unconventional, the results cannot be accepted uncritically.
