| Tiivistelmä: | Recent trends in the activities of European manufacturers are analyzed on the basis of data of annual surveys between 1983-87. The priorities set for the development of the various types of capabilities in manufacturing, and the specific programs under implementation for performance improvement and receiving highest attention are described. Statistically significant associations between specific improvement programs and profitability and growth are also established. A typical large European manufacturer, after being shaken up by a recurring profitability crisis and the discovery of low-price high-quality competitive products, believes, that he has to restructure his manufacturing and is closing the gap in quality. |
