Tiivistelmä:The economist's point of view is used to consider what kind of rationale there can be that the programme to try to make the profession more businesslike seeks to dismantle. The requirements of professional ethics regarded either as assurance of fair conduct or as restrictive practices, involve some departure from full free market principles. Some possible justifications for this departure are considered: asymmetric information, public good provision and externalities, etc. Options for public policy and the traditional option are discussed in some detail. Characteristic employed professionals are analyzed. Finally, the programme is: businessing the professions and replacing traditional arrangements by competition.
