Tiivistelmä:A queueing model with the service station subject to breakdown while it is busy is developed for determining analytically the optimal batch size in a machining economics problem. The performed sensitivity analysis indicates that departures from the optimum batch size result in moderate waiting-time increases when the batch size is scaled up and significant increases when it is scaled down, because in the latter case the system reaches saturation conditions fast. The sensitivity analysis indicates that the optimal batch size is proportional to the batch set-up time. Simulation procedures show that the analytical results obtained with exponentially distributed tool lives are robust.
