Tiivistelmä:The paper attempts to reconcile two quite different approaches (the first is used primarily by social historians, the second is used by political scientists) in an interpretation which can explain the diverging patterns of class formation that have emerged among capitalist democracies. The author critiques three major strands of the social history perspective on class formation, arguing that they subscribe to common metatheoretical fallacies. The article presents a model of class formation which synthesizes the useful insights of the social history perspective within a rational choice framework and provides an explanation of a central tendency in the historical development of labor movement in capitalist democracies.
