Tiivistelmä:The modern world is increasingly affected by human activities, and due to this many scientists are referring to this era as the "Anthropocene", the Age of Humans. Humans mainly operate in sociotechnical systems, which can be described as occurring in sets of coevolving technological, cultural, institutional, economic, and psychological systems that last over many decades. The current and fairly new set, combines five powerful technology systems: nanotechnology, biotechnology, robotics, information and communication technology, and cognitive science. Understanding the implications of this sociotechnical setting for industrial ecology brings profound theoretical challenges in addition to important new areas of research.
