Tiivistelmä: | The notion of shortage cost is operationalized by considering the behaviour of customers and competing firms. The role of inventory in response time competition is examined. A single-firm production-control model is used in which customers are characterized by their preferences of price, quality and delivery time. The optimal production/inventory policy and the optimal choice between make-to-order and make-to-stock operations are determined. The basic model is then extended to an n-firm market game. The analysis shows that competition and other factors such as economies of scale , uncertainty and seasonality can breed a demand for produce-to-stock operations increasing the buyer's while decreasing the producer's welfare. |
