Tiivistelmä:Elite composition changes during the post-Soviet (hereafter as: S.) transition in Russia and Central and Eastern Europe have got scholarly attention. However, developments in other former 'Communist' countries, incl. Kazakhstan (here as: K.), have not attracted scrutiny. This study examines the trajectory of the K. elite through three key perspectives on elite transformation: 1. the country has reverted to traditional clan social structures, 2. the conquest of power by a nascent 'acquisition class', and 3. the S.-era elite was largely successful in maintaining power during the economic reorganisation. It is found that K.'s experience most closely matches the third one.
