| Tiivistelmä: | This paper examines the relationship btw. league position (here as: l-p.) and application rates (as: a-rts.) in the U.K., using rankings from the Sunday Times as an example, with important lessons for higher education (here as: h-e.) all over the world. It is shown that once the league tables (as: l-tbs.) were introduced, there was a significant negative association btw. l-tbs. position and the change in a-rts., an association that subsequently weakened and may even have reversed. The notion of various divisions within the overall l-tbs. is explored , suggesting that there are effectively two 'selecting' divisions, typically choosing from a surplus of applicants, and two 'recruiting' divisions, typically working to avoid an applications shortfall against target numbers. |
