Tiivistelmä:A theoretical frame links the genesis of formal organizations to societal evolution. This frame lends itself to an analysis of the peculiarities of the craft guilds (in Germany) and the developments that caused their decline and replacement by formal organizations. Medieval guilds were not yet formal organizations but formed important predecessor institutions in the evolution that led to the emergence of organizations. It is shown that the guilds' multifunctionality, their use of rituals and symbols, and their inability to innovate were interrelated phenomena. The transition from guilds to manufactories and putting-out systems required a coevolution of world views, markets, work institutions etc.
