Tiivistelmä:This article illustrates an empirical analysis focusing on firm- and industry-specific determinants of new-firm survival in the manufacturing sector of Baden-Wuerttemberg in Germany between 1981 and 1994. The authors use parametric and semiparametric duration models and take into account also the problem of unobserved heterogeneity. The findings suggest that the risk of new-firm failure is affected by industry's minimum efficient scale, the sectoral demand-conditions, the narrowness of the market, and the dynamics of foundation within an industry.
