| Tiivistelmä: | This rapport compares the qualification on three levels in Germany relative to Great Britain. Its impact on labour productivity growth performance is analyzed for thirty manufacturing industries for the period between 1979 and 1989 and is illustrated by case studies. Although the qualification structure differs widely in 1979 we find a significant statistical impact of qualification levels on productivity growth and export performance in both countries. During this period British industries show a marked improvement in the average level of qualification and they reduce the productivity gap with respect to Germany from 40% to 16%. Further, the strong influence of university graduates on export performance and innovations is particulary remarkable. |
