Tiivistelmä:This paper deals with the question of whether more accountability (hereafter as: acc-ty.) is always and unambiguously desirable from the view point of ethics by inquiring into the limits that the accountable self (herein as: a-s.) faces when giving an account. Building on Judith Butler's recent work, the a-s. is decribed as an opaque, exposed, and mediated self inherently limited in its ability to give an account of itself. Due to these limits, demands for acc-ty. cannot always be expected to get fully met. The ethical importance of recognizing this limited nature of acc-ty. is pointed out.
