Tiivistelmä: | By intuition, it would seem that choice is important for democracy. However, the empirical question, whether people actually value facing distinct options when they vote, remains unanswered. In this study I seek to improve that situation by systematically addressing the question using cross-national survey data. Especially, I investigate whether satisfaction with democracy depends on the number and/or the substance of the choices available to voters. The analysis strongly supports the idea that voters value most the substance of electoral choices. Although the number of choices also matters, the significance of this factor depends on being able to vote for a party representing one's views, or on voting for the winner. |
