Tiivistelmä:Firms usually benefit from being proximately located with other firms in the same industry, specifically by the knowledge "spillover" effects from vertical and horizontal interactions. This article introduces evidence from surveys of networking patterns in UK biotechnology. The focus is on how firms engage with other small firms, large pharmaceuticals and research centres, and how far these interactions are regional, national or international. The paper argues that there is a tendency for the intensity of collaboration activity to increase as the location ot the partner moves from the local to the international space. Thus, local linkages may work for idea creation and early product development, but national and international connections are more important for manufacturing, marketing and distribution activities. To conclude, the paper states that a broader set of largely industry factors cause the networking patterns and that these matter more to clustered UK biotechnology firms than the cluster itself.
