Tiivistelmä:Based on evidence from the U.S. hospital industry, this paper investigates whether organizational (here as: org-al.) changes affect investment decisions. During the 1990s, hospitals (as: hosps.) and physicians have reorganized their way of trading with each other, vertically consolidating the provision of health care services (as: hcs). Empirical evidence shows that hosps. adopting the new org-al. forms add more hcs. over time than hosps. that are independent of their physicians. In addition, it is also found that when the average percentage of county population covered by each HMO (health maintenance organization) increases, the differences in investment behaviour btw. vertically consolidated and independent hosps. get larger.
