| Tiivistelmä: | Papers that predict the form of information technology (IT) in the year of 2000 are in plentiful supply. What is missing is a vision of what the IT function in a large organization must become in order to enable this progress. An attempt is made to fill this gap. The 1980 vision of today is reconsidered. The fundamental technology and business assumptions that have driven prediction are described. Scenarios illustrate how the IT function will evolve in terms of applications, application architectures, application development, management of IT-based change, and economics. Finally, some key challenges in the next decade for the IT executive and other senior managers are highlighted. |
