| Tiivistelmä: | The concept of coherence is defined using the theory of the firm as a frame of reference. Two levels of analysis are specified: the level of activities, and the level of the company as a whole. When two or more activities within a firm have common characteristics, there exists coherence between them. It is shown how and why coherence differs from specialization. Some limitations of the existing theories of the firm are described and analyzed. A coherence theory of the large enterprise is sketched. A number of tentative propositions of this new theory are put forward and investigated. Some organizational and managerial implications of the theory are indicated. |
