| Tiivistelmä: | Using Kuhn's concept of paradigm for scientific discussions, paradigms in future studies are considered. Three different approaches are identified on the basis of their ontological attitude towards the ideas of change, evolution or progress in societal systems. These paradigms are /1/ descriptive futures research, /2/ the scenario paradigm and /3/ evolutionary futures research. The first two are more or less well established, though heterogeneous, branches in the futures field. Evolutionary futures research is only emerging presently. Its roots are in the study of complex, self-organizing evolutionary systems. |
