Tiivistelmä:This study analyzes the development of employment (hereafter as: empl.) in start-up cohorts, which is the direct gross employment effect of the new businesses based on data for West Germany from 1984 to 2002. While total empl. in the cohorts remains above the initial level in manufacturing, a pronounced decline of employment below this level is found in the service sector. A considerable amount of jobs is created by merely a small fraction of firms. The contribution by start-up cohorts of the studied period for total empl. in 2002 is nearly three times as high in services as in manufacturing.
