| Tiivistelmä: | This paper is concerned with the evolution in the United States of the various forms of rail passenger service from central cities to suburban and extended radial areas, and the importance of current trends in metropolitan population and traffic patterns. All forms of mass transit have suffered in recent decades from the rise in automobile use and the shifting nature of commuter and other travel patterns, with the decline in the traffic to the central city and the lower concentration of trips that characterized earlier decades. The types of traffic held up the best are those from the outlying radial suburbs to the central city and those on commuter rail and mass transit rail systems. |
