| Tiivistelmä: | The exchange of goods for other goods rather than for money is on the upswing, but many US managers are unenthusiastic about this countertrade. Different forms of countertrade are described: offset, counterpurchase, compensation, barter, switch trading. Some survey data on the proportion of countertrade practices in 1983, and 1986 are published and commented. A countertrade implementation model is sketched and strategic issues are dealt with. Arguments are developed that mixing countertrade and offshore sourcing can lead to a real strategic advantage. Practical advice is offered to materials managers how to approach this often misunderstood practice. |
