Tiivistelmä:A significant threat to the coverage of telephone surveys in the UK is the rapidly increasing proportion of residential telephone numbers which do not appear in published or computerised directories. One solution that has been adopted so far is the use of "Directory Plus 1" dialing. The best alternative seems to be Random Digit Dialing /RDD/. Barriers to using RDD in the UK and adapting it for use in the UK are discussed. The two methods were compared in an experiment; strike-rate and non-response rate are presented. The RDD approach yielded more numbers reported by the respondents to be unlisted in directories, but response rates for both sampling methods were not good. Market research agencies are unaware of the limitations of their sampling methods.
