Tiivistelmä:The European Community (EC) claims to follow GATT rules, but provides in practice many measures exercising preferential treatment. Development of trade relations between the EC and India, the first commercial and economic co-operation agreement /CECA/ signed in 1973 and the objectives of the new CECA signed in 1981 are briefly discussed. Industrial, technological, and scientific co-operation has been enlarged. A joint commission has been established for reviewing the implementation of the agreement. The functioning of the agreement is examined, effects of endeavours on exports are evaluated, trends in India's external trade are analysed. The activities within the CECA have not yielded the desired results.
