Tiivistelmä:The United States produces about 212 million tons of hazardous waste a year. In 1980, Congress enacted the Superfund Act, to clean up hazardous waste sites that posed a potential danger to the public. The Act's relevance to company managers is examined, including the potential for liability, direct and indirect costs, the impact on corporate balance sheets, and the threat to corporate officers of personal liability. Arguments are presented that environmental issues are manageable. The Act's impact on corporate mergers and acquisitions is investigated. Three questions to managers: How much is their company's worth? Have they made hazardous waste risk analysis a part of strategic planning? Are environmental problems reflected in information?
