| Tiivistelmä: | The author compares (1) the domestic and international origins of reform in Russia under Leonid Brezhnev with those under Nicholas I; (2) the logic scope and limits of reform initiated by their successors, Mikhael Gorbachev and Alexander II; and (3) the domestic and international consequences of both rounds of major reform. The author argues that there are remarkable similarities between the two periods which seem to reflect certain continuities in the Russian historical experience, which leads him to the assumption that some "new thinking" might be in order. |
