Tiivistelmä:The expression the dutch disease is used to indicate the situation in a national economy when, for whatever reason, the balance of payments is in equilibrium but the value of foreign currency is decreased. The term was first used during the energy crisis to define the substantial increase in commodity prices in the seventies. In Slovenia we can talk about the dutch disease after the introduction of the Slovenian tolar on 8 October 1991.By June 1992 the foreign currency value dropped so low that the real tolar exchange increased by 42%.This ruined the changes of fast economic growth, which would be supported by an export drive and a secure internal equilibrium.By June 1992 , when the government was replaced, the dutch disease in Slovenia was deepened by the indexation of salaries. After the change of the government the dutch disease has been affected by the growth of salaries which has exceeded inflation. In Slovenia the reasons for low foreign currency demand and the dutch disease are the following: the (by six months) delayed anti-inflationary policy and the lack of de-indexation of salaries and exchange rates.
