Tiivistelmä:Dawn, a native of New York's South Bronx , had never been to Wall Street. A single mother to a three-year-old son, she was living at her mother's South Bronx apartment and relying solely on public assistance. When she visited downtown Manhattan's concrete canyon for the first time to interview for a secreterial position with a prestigious law firm, she didn't know what to expect. "I was scared," the 23-year-old woman says. "I had graduated from high school and a business trade school, but when I had my son, I couldn't keep up with a job. Then when I was ready, I couldn't find one. I was depressed and anxious." Then Dawn learned about America Works. "My friends told me about this agency that works with single mothers on wellfare," says the professionally dressed and well-groomed woman, seated in the conference room at the law office where she has now worked for seven months.
