Tiivistelmä:What is sustainable development? Why is it an issue? What needs to be done? and What can actually be done about it? are questions that preoccupy economists, policymakers, resource managers and scientists. Conventional answers are much debated. This commentary sketches an unusual but relevant approach of interest to ecological economists. The four questions are answered using the framework of Girardian economics of the French economist, Andre Orlean, based inturn on Rene Girard's theory of mimetic rivalry.
