| Tiivistelmä: | This analysis of the evolution of governance structures in business enterprises follows a historically oriented path of research. It is maintained that Coase's confrontation of market coordination and hierarchical firm-organization is rooted in unique historical events of graeco-roman culture. Yet the notion of an economy as an institution of its own standing was wholly alien to antique thinking. The activity of economizing was embedded in "non-economic" institutions, it was not conceived of as an institutional problem on its own account. |
