Tiivistelmä:Organizations of 21th century will require designs that enable them to cope with radical changes in technology, hypercompetition, and new workforce values. There has been little systematic attempt to study the benefits, costs and the factors enabling successful implementation, although there has been widespread recognition that these designs represent a new stage in organizational evolution. Organizations have experimented with lateral organizational designs, but research evidence concerning these forms is sparse. This study analyzes data obtained from employees within eight diverse organizations implementing flexible lateral organizations, and using a sequence comparison methodology, identified and categorized the major costs, benefits and enablers associated with implementing these complex organization forms.
