Tiivistelmä:In the old univrsities female academics on average received salaries which were around 15% less than the male average in 1992. Since appointments, starting salaries, and earnings progression in British universities are formally structured, the expectation is that women academics must be quite different from men in ways which affect their earnings power. This is partly borne out by the analysis of the earnings determination in the university sector presented in this article. Women academics have less labor market experience, are under-represented amongst senior appointments and are concentrated in faculties where salaries are generally lower. Around on third of the total salary differential remains after controlling for these characteristics.
