DEPOSIT INSURANCE

Tiivistelmä:Last July, the Nigerian Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC), began paying out N5.9bn to about 1.7m depositors who had lost money when 26 commercial and merchant banks were liquidated in March 1997. The distraught depositors had made their way through the maze of proving their claims, in order to receive the maximum N50,000 insurance. The resulting distress syndrome still haunts the banking industry. According to Mr John Ebhodoghe, managing director of NDIC, the magnitude and depth of distress in the system has remained an issue of concern to government, regulatory authorities, bankers and the public alike.
