Tiivistelmä:This paper discusses empirical strategies for examining some of the recent theoretical work on firms' boundaries. The authors' discussion emphasizes the importance of testing theories' general propositions rather than specific models, the returns from field work in linking conceptual and institutional detail, and the promise of empirical strategies that rely on variation in the contracting environment. The authors focus on two seminal papers in this large literature: Grossman and Hart (1986) and Holmstrom and Milgrom (1994). The authors do not discuss the empirical literature on transaction-cost economics or its relationship to the more recent literature, a topic covered by Michael D. Whinston (2001) elsewhere in this session.
