| Tiivistelmä: | The subject of this paper is capital investments in Europe. The paper considers the major driver of significant change in sovereign risk, pays attention to the problem with hedging and answers the question what could determine the timing of when a country like Poland joins the European Union. The author states that the foreign investors can play a role in revitalizing the economies of central and eastern Europe. But it is essential that they understand the workings of sovereign risk first. The alternative approaches of taking a predominantly (rather than complementary) sector view or bottom-up view are too often followed by a discovery in a crisis that one is, after all, mainly exposed to sovereign risk. |
