| Tiivistelmä: | Spending on information technology is staggering. Over the past few years, the top 500 U.S. companies in revenue earned have collectively spent well over $100 billion on their information systems. For most firms, however, determining the actual yield on IT investments in terms of business value delivered is a hit or miss proposition. Consider these statistics: In 2000, almost three-quarters of IT projects failed, in the sense that they were canceled before completion or never implemented (23 percent) or were completed late, over budget, or below specifications (49 percent). American companies and government agencies spend an estimated $75 billion on failed IT projects annually, in addition to another $22 billion over budget for software projects that are eventually completed. |
