Tiivistelmä:This study deals with the effects of three airport barriers to entry, that is, slot controls, gate constraints, and gate utilisation during peak operating periods (here as: p-o-ps.), on both entry and yields in the U.S. airline industry. The data consists of all entries into the top 500 U.S. non-stop city pair markets for the one-year period from the 3rd quarter (as: Q.) of 1996 to the 2nd Q. of 1997. It is shown that all the three barriers have a significant impact on yields, while high gate utilisation during p-o-ps. is the most significant deterrent to entry. The results indicate that either the construction of new gates, or the undertaking of provisions to allow new entrants gate access during p-o-ps., would be most effective in increasing entry onto routes from congested airports.
