Tiivistelmä:In order to attain the catching-up of the East German economy to the West German economy small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) have a critical role in the financing. However, it can be difficult for East German SMEs to get loans from banks. This article tests differences in credit risk variables and their influence on the terms of lending (interest rate, collateral) among German banks in 1997 to discover whether a gap btw. East and West really exists. It is found that East German firms do pay higher interest rates and they have to provide more collateral than West German firms.
