| Tiivistelmä: | The authors examine the asymmetric competition between strategic groups in a certain industry. It is hypothesized that asymmetric competition exists in a way that strategic groups of small firms have higher levels of response, but at a lower speed to the actions of strategic groups of large companies, than vice versa. In order to test this, an ex post approach is used to study news releases. Another hypothesis compares ex ante rivalry expectations with ex post asymmetric competition between strategic groups. The empirical application to test this hypothesis is constructed in bank deposits market in Spain. The results indicate how smaller strategic groups in the Bank industry have higher levels of response and slower speed of response to the actions of industrys large strategic groups, than the other way around. Further, ex ante expectations of aggressiveness from the large strategic groups lead to greater ex post reactions of smaller groups. The size of the strategic groups seems to be significant to research on complicated industries with deregulation changes. |
