| Tiivistelmä: | The development of industrial ecology is closely linked to the metaphor of natural ecosystems and the growing concern over the ability of our planet to sustain human life. This paper investigates the connection between sustainability and industrial ecology and argues that due to its roots in classical ecology models industrial ecology is unable to extensively address the full the goals of sustainability. As a solution to this, the article suggests moving away from classical ecology models towards complexity models, which argue that living systems are self-reproducing. According to this study, complexity theory may set up alternatives for current normative models of sustainability as an emergent property. |
