Tiivistelmä:It was urged by Martin Luther that each town should have a girls' school in order to teach the girls how to read the Gospel, thereby evoking a surge of building girls' schools in Protestant areas. Country- and town-level data from the first Prussian census of 1816 is used to show that a larger share of Protestants decreased the gender gap in basic education.
