Tiivistelmä:Conflicting breakdown theories for units in a fleet are stated. Plausible hypotheses of the location and failure pattern of parts comprising complex plant, the mechanisms of deterioration present, and those people bearing responsibility for the plant, are outlined. The object is to test these hypotheses, using cross sectional analysis of large diversified construction fleets. The association between age and breakdown rate per unit of time is not as strong as that between age and differing mix of components and, based on this evidence, the best deduction is that age of complicated units is unrelated to the likelihood of failure.
