Tiivistelmä:A model of an assembly system with proportional costs of production is examined. It is a generalization of the work on multiechelon inventory theory. The interest is limited to those stock levels that can prevail in the long run for systems run by optimal or otherwise reasonable policies. It is demonstrated how assembly systems may be interpreted as serial systems. Hence, there is a simple optimal reorder policy that can be calculated conveniently. This result contrasts most encouragingly to the computational intractability of a generally optimal policy. Suggestions are given for applying simple approximate policies for the generally short period of time when the long-run balance conditions of systems are not satisfied.
