Tiivistelmä:There is no universal minimum wage in great Britain. Instead, minimum wages, called statutory minimum rates or SMR's are established by individual wages councils and wage boards in specific low-paid industries. The employment effects of setting wage minima above their equilibrium levels in Great Britain are estimated. The history of wages councils is briefly reviewed. A CES production function is used to derive estimates of the elasticity of demand for male and female labour in those industries covered by SMR's. Estimates of the employment effects of the SMR's are provided combining the estimates of the elasticity of demand with the estimates of the wage increase effects of the SMR's.
