| Tiivistelmä: | Policy discussions concerning global warming have been based on the assumption that carbon dioxide emissions from developing countries cannot be limited without slowing their economic growth. It is shown that a range of energy efficiency options in developing nations are not only far less expensive than expanding energy supply, but also offer the most promising path to limiting carbon dioxide emissions while at the same time expanding economic growth. Energy efficiency allows resources to be shifted from wasteful expenditure on energy to more productive sectors. The reviewed case studies demonstrate an enormous untapped potential to promote sustainable economic expansion in developing nations and to slow growth in emissions. |
